The area's abundant natural resources provided an excellent
setting for the earliest development of the Vosges' 500-year-old paper industry, which
today is made up of almost a dozen manufacturing plants. Together they employ 3,300
employees and produce 780,000 tons of paper per year. This sector has grown to become one
of the nation's leading manufacturing hug for paper and cardboard products.

Because of the many advantages that the Vosges has to
offer, the department has been able to attract the subsidiaries and manufacturing plants
of some of the largest international groups.
Among the region's assets are exceptional forest resources, (one of the densest
hydrographic systems in France), nearby access to international markets, a highly
productive workforce (trained in the latest techniques), and relatively low energy costs
(particularly for electricity) in comparison to those of neighboring countries.
The sector's outstanding overall performance in exports, equal to 25% of overall Vosges
production, is further evidence of the exceptional conditions for success that exist in
the department. |
