The timber industry developed first as a craft and later became a very prosperous industry. The Vosges mountains are home to one of the most extensive forests in France. Because of the wide variety of species present, the Vosges provides the site for a wide range of timber-related activities. Over 1,000 firms are active in the primary and secondary wood processing stages. The abundance of both forest and industry has earned the Vosges not only a leading position in relation to other French departments for its total forest area, but also for the quantity of timber that it processes.

This industrial branch provides jobs to 8,500 employees who work in three main sectors, including forest development, sawing and secondary timber processing.

Sawing holds a key position among these different activities, providing quality lumber and wood for industrial use. In 1988, the "Sélection Vosges" quality label, the first of its kind in France, was established in order to ensure the quality of coniferous wood cuttings.
