Wheat and oilseed production has
increased considerably over the past 10
years, particularly in the Vosges
plains. The area cultivated amounts to
12,350 acres of wheat and barley and
57,551 acres of rapeseed. For the most
part, processing operations are handled
by industrial firms outside of the
department, with the exception of a few
local food processing mills.

The department also includes other, more
specialized high-performance branches of
the food industry. Thiriet SA, for
example, ranks fifth in France for its
production of ice cream, which is
distributed throughout France and
exported to the British, German, Belgian,
Swiss and (soon) Asian markets. |
